About joma.film
joma.film is an independent film distribution platform — filmmaker driven, curator amplified, fan supported.
We connect filmmakers directly with audiences through a curator-powered discovery model. Filmmakers set their own pricing and retain control of their work. Curators help surface great films and earn a share of the revenue. Fans get access to films they won't find anywhere else.
Why joma?
- Sell direct to fans
- Filmmakers earn 70–80% on every rental and sale
- View and download real-time sales, analytics, and customer data through your filmmaker dashboard
- Set pricing and discounts for purchases, rentals, merchandise, and bundles
- Create watch lists with your own films or in collaboration with other filmmakers
- Share revenue with partners through automated attribution and payouts
- Fans can add tips on top of purchases — tips go directly to the filmmaker, no platform cut (only credit card fees)
- Non-exclusive — sell on joma.film alongside any other platform
How it works
What if I already have a distribution deal?
No problem! If you've already got distribution, you can still have your film on joma. In this scenario, we work with your current distribution team to make sure they still get their cut.
When a viewer clicks "buy" or "rent," what happens next? Can they download my film? How much time do they get to watch it?
When someone clicks "buy," your film goes into their online library on our site. They'll have access to view your film via our platform whenever they wish. However, they will not be able to download it. You can also choose to sell the film as a rental — when someone clicks "rent," they're granted access to your film for streaming for a specific time window that you set.
Do I get to set my own price for viewing my film?
Yes indeed! You can choose your own pricing for viewers. We encourage a premium price akin to what a ticket would cost at a film festival, with a note about how this is "direct to artist" support. Our recommendation for feature-length films is $15–20 for "buy" and $8–12 for "rent." These price points can be adjusted or changed at any time.
Will a curator always get a cut of the deal?
No. We offer a percentage of sales to curators when audience members find your film through curator promotion or through curated lists. We set aside 10% for this, but if the sale is made direct (without a curator), this is returned to the filmmaker and you keep 80% of the sale price. You may choose to allocate more to all curators who share your film, or just to a group of specific curators. (If you use your own custom domain, you can opt out of curator arrangements entirely.)
Tell me more!
Let's say your film was featured in the line-up at AIFF, and the Director of Programming put out a newsletter link to your film for fest-goers to view at home. If audience members used that link to find your film, that "curator" would receive a percentage of that rental fee.
How will people find my film?
Send a direct link to your film to your mailing list, embed it on your own website, or share it with curators. Beyond that, joma.film is a public site — viewers browsing the site or arriving from a curator's list can find your film organically.
How is this model different than others?
joma was created with sharing and expansion in mind, by filmmakers for filmmakers. The more curated lists your film shows up on, the more chances for rentals, and the more revenue you earn.
How often will I get paid out once I start earning streaming revenue?
You can view real-time transactions and payouts. You can request payouts through Stripe Connect, Venmo, or PayPal. Payouts are automatically processed quarterly, but you can request an earlier transfer.
Do viewers need any special equipment to watch my film?
No! Once a customer rents your film, they can screen on any laptop, tablet, or phone. They can easily connect an HDMI cable to view larger via TV or projection system, or connect wirelessly via screencast. We will also have a Roku viewing app available soon. See the FAQ for more on supported devices and casting to your TV.
What does it cost?
- 20% flat platform fee on transactions — covers credit card fees, hosting, and all filmmaker and curator payouts
- 10% curator share — only on sales attributed to a curator
- Filmmakers can increase the curator share if they wish (for all curators or for specific partners) out of their share
- 70–80% to filmmaker on every transaction, depending on curator participation and any discounts offered
No hidden fees, no funny business.
